The owner of the Häagen-Dazs ice cream brand on Monday announced a recall of a batch of its “Chocolate Dark Chocolate Mini Bars” amid concerns that they may contain undeclared wheat.
Dreyer’s Grand Ice Cream indicated that the 6-count packages affected by the recall feature the batch code LLA519501 and a “best by” date of Jan. 31, 2017. Those products, the company wrote in a notice posted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, were shipped to Kroger and Giant Eagle supermarkets across 31 states.
Dreyer’s officials said that although an investigation into the problem remained ongoing as of Monday, “we believe products containing wheat were repacked into the incorrect packaging at the beginning of a production run.” The company said that no illnesses or injuries related to the issue had been reported.
The company said that consumers with wheat allergies or sensitivities should dispose of the product or return it to the place of purchase for a refund.
"The safety, quality and integrity of our products remain our no. 1 priority,” Dreyer’s officials said. “We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this action represents to both our consumers and retail customers.”
Dreyer’s is owned by Froneri, a joint venture between Nestle and French private equity firm PAI Partners.
