The New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission said CannPowerment has initiated a voluntary recall of specific lots of “ButaCake Peach Elixir 5mg” cannabis-infused beverage products, following reports of potential packaging and structural compromise.

According to the manufacturer, the recall was initiated out of caution while the licensee investigates the root cause of the packaging issue, in coordination with the New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission (NJ-CRC). At this time, no adverse events have been reported.

A very limited number of cans were reported to exhibit signs of expansion or swelling, the company said, adding that out of nearly 10,000 cans produced and distributed, fewer than 25 cans have been identified with this condition.

"When we refer to a 'potential packaging and structural compromise,' we are referring to those isolated instances of can expansion. The issue does not involve widespread product failure across the production run," said Matha Figaro, a spokesperson for CannPowerment. "Based on the information currently available, this appears to be limited to a very small percentage of cans. We are not aware of any reports of consumer injuries associated with the products, and extensive testing conducted both before and after the recall has confirmed that the beverages meet applicable safety standards."
