Publix on Wednesday announced a recall of its store-brand organic frozen blueberries and mixed berries due to the possibility that they could be contaminated with E. coli.
The Florida-based grocery chain said that the recall of the GreenWise brand products follows an initial recall of a single lot of GreenWise organic blueberries in early July by a Chilean company. Publix officials said that the expanded recall was initiated “out of an abundance of caution” based on “public health officials’ product traceback and epidemiological information.”
The recalled products were shipped to Publix stores in Florida as well as Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, North and South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia; the company placed an internal stop sale on Greenwise organic whole blueberries and whole mixed berries as of the end of June, and they remain unavailable for purchase.
Customers who previously purchased them were urged to discard the berries or return them to Publix for a refund.
