An egg producer is recalling millions of eggs shipped across multiple southern states over concerns they could be contaminated by salmonella, according to a recall alert posted by the FDA on Wednesday.
Midwest Poultry Services said the recall impacts nearly 1.59 million dozen white shell eggs and brown cage-free shell eggs, which would translate to more than 19 million individual eggs. The impacted products were shipped from its Texas farms to foodservice and retail customers in Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana; they were available for customer purchase at Kroger stores in Texas and Louisiana, Brookshire Grocery locations in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas, and “other smaller retail outlets.”
The company said that the potential contamination was found on two Texas farms by “proactive environmental monitoring practices and root cause analysis.” Consumers who purchased the affected products should avoid consuming them and return them to the place of purchase for a refund; the company said it is not aware of any illnesses linked to the products.
Midwest Poultry Services added Wednesday that it is not distributing eggs produced on its Texas farms “at this time.”
