W.W. Industrial Group Inc. said last week that it has recalled 15-ounce cans of Parashore brand pear slices because they could be contaminated with elevated levels of lead and cadmium.

The company said in a statement posted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration that the heavy metal contamination was found during sampling conducted by the Maryland Department of Health. W.W. Industrial added that it has started an investigation to determine the cause of the problem.

The canned pears were distributed to Grocery Outlet across the U.S. Consumers were urged to discard the pears or return them to the place of purchase for a refund.
