Hartford Bakery Inc. announced Thursday that it is voluntarily recalling six lots of its Lewis Bake Shop brand “Artisan Style 1/2 Loaf” because the product could contain undeclared hazelnuts.
The company said that approximately 883 loaves of bread from six production lots contained visible hazelnuts and distributed in “Lewis Bake Shop Artisan Style 1/2 Loaf” packaging. Although the packaging states that the bread “May Contain Tree Nuts,” it does not state that it “Contains Hazelnuts.”
Hartford Bakery said that an internal investigation pinned the error on a change in packaging from a hazelnut-containing bread to the implicated white bread product.
The recalled loaves were distributed to retailers — including Walmart and Kroger — in 12 states across the Southeast and Midwest. The company said it is aware of a customer who “experienced digestive discomfort;” no major reports of injury or illness have been reported.
Consumers who purchased the recalled products should return them to the place of purchase for a refund.
