To combat a rise in COVID-19 cases, authorities in Sitges, Spain began using drones to observe crowds on beaches, Reuters reported.

The drones take photos and run them through a software that counts how many civilians are occupying the beach.

The project is scheduled to run through August 22 in Sitges which possesses 18 kilometers of beach.

"If we see the beach is very crowded, we can pass that information on to the beach monitors who will make checks and ensure people are keeping their distance," local official Guillem Escola said. "If people don't take notice, then we send in the police."

The CDC labeled Spain as a Level 3 on its COVID-19 Levels chart. Level 3, classified as “High,” is the second highest level on the CDC’s four-level chart. Spain’s case count, assisted by the Delta variant, recently passed the 4 million mark since the beginning of the pandemic.
