Nestlé will close a packaging facility in suburban Cleveland and move that production to a plant in upstate South Carolina, company officials said this week.
The facility in Solon, Ohio, makes flexible pouches used by Nestle’s Professional Solutions business for the foodservice industry, according to Cleveland.com; the Swiss food and beverage giant plans to wind down that work in Northeast Ohio by the third quarter of next year and gradually relocate it to Gaffney, South Carolina.
The Solon facility would close outright by the end of 2027. Nestlé told the publication that it expects to file a notice with state officials next spring; officials did not indicate how many jobs would be affected by the decision.
The company told Cleveland.com in a statement that moving pouch production “as customer needs and volumes evolve” represented “the most sustainable path forward.” Its other facilities in Northeast Ohio would not be impacted.
“We understand that this decision is difficult, not only for employees, but also for the community members who have deep ties to the Solon factory,” the company added.
Nestlé told the publication that it operates seven facilities and employs nearly 3,000 people in Ohio, including a new Purina pet food plant near Cincinnati.
