Packaging company Novolex announced Wednesday that its new compostable butter wrap had been certified by one industry group and received a "Gold Award" for sustainability from another.

The TerreGloss and Terrecote wraps, produced by its Shields subsidiary, were named winners of the Flexible Packaging Association's 2025 "Gold Award for Sustainability" and deemed compostable in commercial facilities by the Biodegradable Products Institute.

Novolex officials said that the wraps, used to package four-ounce sticks of butter, are made from a proprietary wax blend free from PFAS substances, also known as "forever chemicals." They are also manufactured from a renewable paper base and are capable of custom printing with "environmentally responsible inks."

The company said the products' performance and sustainability attributes "meet the needs of both consumers and dairies alike."

"These achievements reaffirm our commitment to pioneering the best in packaging solutions," Novolex Chief Technology Officer Adrianne Tipton said in a statement.
