CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — A senior scientist at the Consumers Union, the policy division of "Consumer Reports," is scheduled to speak to a group of New Hampshire lawmakers about proposed legislation requiring the clear labeling of genetically modified foods.
Genetically modified food is grown from seeds specially engineered to resist pesticides or produce extra nutrients.
Michael Hansen of Consumers Union is scheduled to speak to a subcommittee of the House Environment and Agricultural Commodities Committee on Tuesday afternoon.
Opponents of the proposal say genetically modified food is safe and that labeling would be costly and unnecessary. Supporters of the bill say the lack of such labels could lead to potential health risks. Similar bills have been considered in Maine, Vermont and Connecticut.
