PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) β A Rhode Island lawmaker wants consumers to know if they're purchasing food that contains genetically modified ingredients.
Legislation from state Rep. Dennis Canario would require any food containing genetically modified ingredients to bear a label that says "produced with genetic engineering."
The requirement would apply to packaged and processed foods as well as raw fruits and vegetables, meat and dairy items.
Canario, a Portsmouth Democrat, says people should know if they're buying food containing ingredients that have been altered genetically.
Canario says Maine and Connecticut have adopted similar labelling rules β but they won't take effect until other nearby states join in. Canario says that's designed to make the labelling rules easier on food producers.
A legislative hearing on Canario's bill hasn't been scheduled.
