General Mills Closing Iowa Pet Treat Facility

The closure will affect 250 employees.

General Mills announced its Blue Buffalo pet treats manufacturing plant in Independence, Iowa, would close by the end of the year.

The closure will affect 250 employees, the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reported.

General Mills spokesperson Mollie Wulff said the decision supports the company’s pet supply chain strategy.

Wulff added that impacted employees would receive “career services and benefits support.”

General Mills has operated the Independence site since it acquired the plant from Tyson Foods in 2021.

The $1.2 billion cash deal also included the acquisition of Tyson Foods’ animal treat business.

The Independence facility manufactures products for Top Chews and Nudges brands.
