WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Labor today announced its intention to fund a grant of up to $3 million to improve the working and living conditions for field workers and their families in the Dominican Republic sugar sector.
Administered by the Bureau of International Labor Affairs, this funding opportunity will finance a project to strengthen support networks among workers, their communities and civil society organizations. Specifically, the project will help workers and their families use formal and informal mechanisms, such as legal assistance, social services, and grievance and dialogue processes.
The project will also support unions in the sugar sector, government ministries and sugar companies to involve field workers more effectively in improving their working and living conditions.
The project is part of the department’s Multilateral Partnership for Organizing, Worker Empowerment and Rights, an initiative to strengthen workplace democracy globally by supporting worker rights and empowerment through program and policy interventions.
