Fruit and vegetable producer Dole earlier this month announced that its R&D staff has successfully bred a new variety of pineapple that also tastes like coconut.
The company’s “Colada Royale” pineapple stemmed from 15 years of work at its oldest Latin American pineapple farm in La Ceiba, Honduras. The green-to-gold colored fruit is cream-colored on the inside and has “distinct notes of coconut and piña colada,” officials said.
Dole successfully rolled out the Colada Royale in time to mark the 125th anniversary of its pineapple business next year.
“Our new Colada Royale pineapple is not just a novelty or publicity gimmick; it’s Dole’s long-term strategy for getting more people to embrace the tropical majesty of pineapples with a luxurious new taste experience that leaves you wanting more,” Bil Goldfield, the company’s communications director, said in a statement. “It becomes our premium fresh pineapple experience and the centerpiece of Dole’s quasquicentennial celebration of growing the world’s no. 1 organic and conventional pineapple.”
Dole said that it plans to contribute a percentage of the proceeds from sales of Colada Royale pineapples to develop a new center for farm workers and their families in La Ceiba.
