Flavor manufacturer T. Hasegawa USA on Thursday launched a "breakthrough technology" that could redefine the flavors of plant-based proteins.

The company said its PLANTREACT product utilizes "advanced flavor reaction techniques" to replicate "the complex, savory taste of animal proteins" in vegan applications.

Officials said the flavor solution could make plant-based proteins more appealing, thereby solving one of the food sector's biggest challenges.

"Interest in plant-based diets is greater than ever, but the flavor profile of plant-based proteins has been a barrier for many consumers in the past, " Mary Maier, director of flavor creation at T. Hasegawa USA, said in a statement. "We're excited to offer a solution to this problem and change consumer perceptions of plant-based proteins with a natural technology that delivers a more satisfying and authentic taste experience."

PLANTREACT launched with beef, chicken and pork flavor formulations. The company's milk variant, meanwhile, aims to deliver a rich and creamy dairy alternative that addresses manufacturing challenges in vegan products.
