Finnish food tech startup Solar Foods announced Thursday that it has developed a new protein shake powder using its Solein product — a protein made by fermenting microbes using only air and renewable power.

The company said that the "Solein Shake - Salty Caramel edition" is designed to meet daily protein needs. The product is one of numerous concepts demonstrating the company's technology for the consumer market.

“Solein is especially well-suited to be used in different kinds of ready-to-mix protein powders as it blends well with liquid, bringing richness and indulgent, creamy consistency without dairy," Solar Foods' Juan Manuel Benitez-Garcia said in the announcement. "'Solein Shake' is one example of such a protein powder, ready for consumers as it is or to be adjusted to different consumer needs."

The company said that the mix is sugar-free, doesn't contain any major allergens, and offers all essential amino acids and iron and vitamin B12 — the latter two of which cannot be offered by plant-based proteins.
