AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — A bill that requires labeling for genetically modified food is going to become law in Maine.
The bill, approved by the Legislature in the last session and signed by Maine Gov. Paul LePage on Wednesday, will only go into effect if other Northeastern states approve similar measures.
The Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association is praising the law, saying Maine becomes the second state to adopt labeling requirements for foods derived from genetically modified crops. Connecticut approved a similar measure last year.
The Maine Grocers Association, which opposed the measure, says genetically modified foods are safe and that labeling the products will be costly and burdensome.
