Sargento Foods announced Thursday that it has signed an agreement to acquire La Terra Fina — a move that would expand the Wisconsin cheese maker into a new grocery category.

La Terra Fina, located in California’s Bay Area, makes dips, spreads and quiches. It has been owned by Catamount Management Corp. since 2015.

Sargento officials said that the deal would bring the 73-year-old cheese producer into grocery deli cases for the first time, as well as advance its vision for becoming “the most innovative, best-loved real food company.”

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"This venture reflects the strength of what we've built and puts La Terra Fina in a great position for accelerated growth,” Stephen Cottrell, La Terra Fina’s president and CEO, said in a statement. “And what's even better is that our cultures are genuinely aligned.”
