Private equity firm the Hoffmann Family of Companies has acquired a Wisconsin producer of ice cream and other frozen desserts, the firm announced.

Cedar Crest Ice Cream, founded 50 years ago and led by brothers Ken, Robert, Bill and Tim Kohlwey, offers more than 80 ice cream flavors, 10 custard varieties, six sherbet flavors and three dairy-free sorbets. The company is headquartered in Cedarburg, a Milwaukee suburb, and operates a manufacturing plant and ice cream shop in Manitowoc.

HF Companies, which also owns Oberweis Dairy and Elmer Chocolate among more than 200 companies overall, said that Oberweis CEO Renato DePaolis will lead the Cedar Crest subsidiary but that both would remain “distinct” brands.

Additional details, including financial terms, were not disclosed.

“Together, we represent more than 150 years of rich ice cream history, which is a legacy that is both meaningful and worth celebrating as we look to the future,” DePaolis said in the announcement
