Coca-Cola Will No Longer Sell Sprite in Green Bottles

Cutting the green will make them more recyclable.

Coca-Cola announced this week that Sprite will no longer be sold in its signature green plastic bottle.

The company said that while the green PET material is recyclable, it’s more likely to be turned into single-use plastics like clothing or carpeting.

Removing the color from the plastic should improve the quality of the recycled material and boost availability of food-grade PET.

“When recycled, clear PET Sprite bottles can be remade into bottles, helping drive a circular economy for plastic,” the company said.

The rest of Coca-Cola’s green plastic portfolio—including Fresca, Seagram’s and Mello Yello—will also transition to clear this year.

Coca-Cola also announced that all of its Dasani water bottles will now be made from 100% recycled plastic.

The company said the move is projected to save more than 20 million pounds of new plastic.
