Meat Plant Workers Found Dead in Hazmat Incident

The incident is the third major accident at the facility in the past decade.

Two maintenance workers were found dead Sept. 12 at a Valley Proteins meat processing plant in Fayetteville, North Carolina, in an incident that remains under investigation.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said the facility was evacuated and a hazmat team was deployed to the scene, along with OSHA.

In a statement, Valley Proteins said the accident “may have occurred by lack of following company safety procedures which both employees have been trained in."

The company added that one of the employees had worked at the plant for 13 years, and the other for less than a month.

The Valley Proteins factory recycles oils, animal fats and animal waste for use in pet foods.

OSHA records show the incident is the third accident at the facility in the past decade.

In 2016, a worker died after falling from a ladder, and a worker’s face was burned in a 2013 incident.
