Shipping Giant: 27K Workers to Be Affected by Reorganization

Maersk handles about 20% of all the containers shipped worldwide.

Copenhagen-based Maersk handles about 20% of all the containers shipped worldwide and supports major customers like Walmart.

According to Reuters, the company has faced pressures from investors to reorganize in order to better integrate in-land logistics with seaborne container operations.

In order to accomplish this, Maersk says it will simplify its operations by absorbing some business units into the organization.

This effort means job cuts where redundant positions are eliminated.

An internal memo seen by Reuters said up to 27,000 of Maersk’s 80,000 employees would be impacted by the restructuring plan.

Maersk recently announced a Q2 revenue decline of 6.5%, but increased profits year-over-year.

CEO Soeren Skou said despite the strong results, the company’s full-year outlook contained “high uncertainties.”
