Coca-Cola and Pepsi are reportedly developing water refill stations that allow customers to refill their own bottles for free, with the option to purchase flavors and carbonation for small fees. The machines could help reduce packaging waste and allow beverage companies to test new flavors.

Coca-Cola piloted a Dasani PureFill station at the Georgia Institute of Technology campus in 2017, which led to follow-up installations at Ohio State University and the University of Central Florida. Pepsi has been testing a similar system under its Beyond the Bottle initiative, which included an Aquafina Water Station. The company deployed 30 prototypes of the machine last year, including three at Penn State University.
