Americans Waste One-Third of All Food Purchases

Throwing Food

A new national survey by the American Dairy Association Mideast finds 94 percent of Americans admit to throwing food away at home. Going a step further, the organization states that the average family wastes nearly one-third of the food they buy, with the average American tossing 250 pounds of food each year. Put another way, it's like tossing one out of every four bags of groceries.

The survey found the top reason for throwing away food at home is that it's past its expiration date, while 60 percent have tossed food because they didn't think it was safe to eat. According to the American Dairy Association Mideast, this waste could translate to $2,000 annually or a donation capable of providing over 8,000 meals to those in need.
