Berkshire Unit Buys Restaurant Food Distributor

A subsidiary of Warren Buffett's company is buying a national restaurant food distributor.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A subsidiary of Warren Buffett's company is buying a national restaurant food distributor.

The McLane Co., which is based in Temple, Texas, said Thursday that it has agreed to buy Meadowbrook Meat Co. Terms of the deal weren't disclosed.

Meadowbrook, which is based in Rocky Mount, N.C., is one of the nation's biggest food distributors for restaurant chains. No changes are planned to Meadowbrook's operations.

McLane CEO Grady Rosier says this acquisition will help the company grow and add to its portfolio of food and beverage companies. McLane already distributes groceries, tobacco, liquor and other items to convenience stores and other retailers.

Omaha-based Berkshire owns more than 80 subsidiaries, including insurance, utility, clothing, railroad and jewelry firms. It also has major investments in such companies as Coca-Cola and Wells Fargo.
