Wisconsin-based military explosives manufacturer Stresau Laboratory faces more than $143K in OSHA penalties for exposing workers to lead.
According to OSHA, the explosive component manufacturer failed to comply with federal safety standards when it started a new production line at its Spooner facility.
Stresau produces components used by the defense industry to build missiles and warheads, and it currently has a contract with the U.S. Navy.
A recent inspection found that the company failed to implement a combination of engineering, work practice and respiratory protection controls. As a result, the employer exposed about 40 employees to lead.
So on Sept. 23rd, OSHA cited the company for ten violations, for everything from failing to conduct preventative maintenance checks on ventilation systems to failing to provide changing rooms and showers for employees who were exposed to lead hazards to prevent cross-contamination and lead dust leaving the facility.
Overexposure to lead can lead to brain damage, as well as kidney disease, gastrointestinal issues and anemia.
