Food Gifts Fill Up Consumers' 2014 Holiday Wish Lists

Food gifts top the wish list for many consumers this holiday season according to a recent study of holiday food gift trends conducted by Omaha Steaks. The survey indicated nearly 86 percent of gift recipients would enjoy receiving a food gift.

US Appeals WTO Decision Against Required Meat Labels

The United States is appealing a World Trade Organization decision that would make it harder for U.S. consumers to know where meat in the grocery store came from. The WTO in October rejected U.S. rules requiring labels on packaged steaks, ribs and other cuts of meat.

Poor Durum Crop to Impact Pasta Consumers

Durum is ground into the semolina flour used to make pasta products. About half of the nation's durum is produced in North Dakota, where wet weather during spring planting and the fall harvest led to a crop that's more than 4 percent smaller than last year's.

Tentative Deal to Settle XL Foods Beef Recall Lawsuit

Lawyers have brokered a tentative deal to settle part of a class-action lawsuit filed over an E. coli outbreak and the largest meat recall in Canadian history. The lawsuit is against XL Foods Inc., which operated a meat-packing plant in southern Alberta during the tainted beef recall in 2012.

Kentucky Whiskey Maker Fetches More Than $28K For 1st Bottle of Bourbon

The bottle appeared to rank among the most expensive bottles of bourbon ever sold. Eric Gregory, president of the Kentucky Distillers' Association, said he doesn't know of any other bottle that sold for that amount or higher. All of the money will go to a local charity.

New FDA Rules Will Put Calorie Counts on Menus

The FDA announced long-delayed calorie labeling rules requiring establishments that sell prepared foods and have 20 or more locations to post the calorie content of food "clearly and conspicuously" on their menus, menu boards and displays. Companies will have until November 2015 to comply.
