Scientists Study Origins of Lager-Making Yeasts

An analysis of Saccharomyces eubayanus, the wandering parent of hybrid lager yeast, revealed its closest affinity to one of two diverse Patagonian populations, confirming it was the cold-loving microbe that 500 years ago found its way to the caves and monastery cellars of Bavaria where lager beer was first concocted.

Smithfield Owner Plans IPO to Raise up to $5.3B

China's WH Group, which became the world's biggest pork company after purchasing U.S.-based Smithfield Foods last year, said Monday that it plans to raise up to $5.3 billion in an initial public offering on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.

Beef Prices Climb to Highest Level Since 1987

A dwindling number of cattle and growing export demand from countries such as China and Japan have caused the average retail cost of fresh beef to climb to $5.28 a pound in February, up almost a quarter from January and the highest price since 1987.

Burger chains have reached maturity, as limited-service burger segment sales contracted in 2013, according to Technomic. Although burger chains tallied U.S. sales of more than $72 million, they recorded nominal growth of only 1.2 percent.

Heartland Food Products Plans $21M Expansion

Heartland Food Products Group, which makes drink mixes and sweeteners, is planning a $21 million project to add production and distribution facilities in Indianapolis. The company anticipates adding up to 160 jobs in the next few years with the expansion.

Allergic Reactions Prompt Kroger Sorbet Recall

The Kroger Co. has recalled its Private Selection Sweet Strawberry Sorbet sold in 13 states because the product may contain milk not listed on the label. Two customers have reported a possible allergic reaction connected to the product.

Lindt Wins Latest Round in Copyright Fight with Haribo

Swiss chocolatier Lindt & Spruengli AG won the latest round in its battle of the bears against Germany's Haribo GmbH. A Cologne appeals court ruled Friday that the company's gold-foil wrapped chocolate teddy doesn't violate Haribo's copyrighted "Gold Bear" name for its gummy bears.

Nevada's food and agricultural exports reached a milestone last year, exceeding 2012 sales by more than $19 million. The Nevada Department of Agriculture says export sales hit $137 million in 2013, an increase of 17 percent from the year before.

Starbucks to Move VIA Instant Coffee Production to Ga.

Starbucks currently produces its VIA product line in Europe, but it will be moving production to Georgia when its south Augusta facility is fully operational. About 70 employees have been hired and packaging operations started in October at the Augusta facility.
