Thought of the Day: Putting Meat to the Test

Food processors and grocers normally do not test the DNA of meat products. But a horsemeat scare in the UK has prompted some to send off samples to forensics labs to ensure the quality of their product. Tesco, the largest grocer in both Britain and Ireland, recently dropped its supplier over the scandal, and says it is currently employing DNA testing to ensure its meat is horse-free. The grocer said in a statement:

"These checks will set a new standard. We want to leave customers in no doubt that that we will do whatever it takes to ensure the quality of their food and that the food they buy is exactly what the label says it is."
