New rules proposed Friday by the FDA are aimed at preventing foodborne illness outbreaks in the wake of several high-profile deadly food contamination cases last year. While manufacturers pore over the new rules to determine how they could change the business of food processing, the FDA is adamant that they are necessary to prevent future food safety incidents. Michael Taylor, the FDA's deputy commissioner for foods, said:
"The rules go very directly to preventing the types of outbreaks we have seen."
