PepsiCo Posts Strong 1Q Profit with More Snack Sales

PepsiCo reported a stronger-than-expected first-quarter profit as the company slashed costs and sold more snacks around the world. The company, which makes Frito-Lay, Gatorade, Mountain Dew and Tropicana, said global snack volume rose 2 percent in the period.

Profit levels in the food manufacturing sector dropped for the third consecutive year and totaled slightly more than $3.5 billion in 2013, according to The Conference Board of Canada. Production is expected to rise by almost 3 percent in 2014, the strongest increase in several years.

Freeze Kills Florida Citrus Trees

Some Florida Panhandle property owners lost thousands of dollars in citrus trees and other non-native plants because of the harsh winter. Temperatures dipped into the 20s and below across the region this winter and ice stayed on the ground for more than 24 hours.

Prairie Sun Foods Buys Corn Oil Plant in Iowa

Prairie Sun Foods LLC has purchased the former Plymouth Oil plant in Merrill, Iowa, with the intention of starting it up again. Prairie Sun Foods bought the plant on Tuesday for $3 million. The sale includes all of the plant's equipment and the acreage on which it sits.

Wash. Company Recalls 83K Pounds of Egg Products

Coca-Cola sold more drinks in the first quarter, but it wasn't because of soda. The world's biggest beverage maker said Tuesday that its global volume for soda fell for first time in at least a decade. The drop was offset by stronger sales of non-carbonated drinks.
