Almond Industry Generates More Than 100K Calif. Jobs

According to a study, the almond industry supports California's economy by generating more than 100,000 jobs and more than $21 billion in gross revenue across all industries in the state, adding about $11 billion to the size of its total economy.

Food Company Fined After Nebraska Worker's Death

Regulators found five safety violations after a 23-year-old worker died earlier this year at Michael Foods Inc.'s operation in Wakefield, Nebraska. The Labor Department has proposed fining the MInnesota-based company $30,900 for violations found after the June 19 death.

Bud Light Adding Messages to Bottle Labels

Each of the new bottles of Bud Light will feature a different "Up For Whatever" message on its label that is intended to inspire spontaneous fun, no matter where or when it's enjoyed. Some Bud Light bottles, for example, will be labeled as "The perfect beer for leaving your comfort zone in another time zone."

Produce Company to Open $52M Atlanta Facility

The Castellini Group is investing $52 million in a new produce processing and distribution center in metro Atlanta and will create 300 new jobs over the next several years. The facility will be built in Conley, about 10 miles south of downtown Atlanta.

Each defendant is charged with making false statements on export applications, wire fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy to sell misbranded meat.

US Unemployment Rates Drop For Vets, Women

November was a good month for women and recent veterans who sought jobs. Recent veterans who served in Iraq or Afghanistan made even bigger strides. The unemployment rate for that group dropped to 5.7 percent from 7.2 percent in October.

5 British Columbia Poultry Farms Quarantined for Bird Flu

Seven countries have imposed trade restrictions on Canadian poultry as a fifth farm in British Columbia's Fraser Valley was put under quarantine for avian influenza. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency said that more than 140,000 turkeys and chickens will be euthanized.

McDonald's Serves Up Weak US Sales

The world's largest hamburger chain said the drop in global sales at locations open at least 13 months included a 4.6 percent decline in the U.S., and a 4 percent decline for the unit that includes the Asia-Pacific region, the Middle East and Africa.
