FunFresh Foods Inc. has recalled 6-ounce packages of its World Berries Organic Cacao Nibs because of an infection of E. coli bacteria.

The San Clemente, Calif. company recalled 500 packages of the snack after its own testing of the finished product found the presence of bacteria. Production has been suspended while the Food and Drug Administration and the company investigate. At least 263 of the packages have already been retrieved from health and natural food retail stores.

E. coli can cause a diarrheal illness often with bloody stools. Most healthy adults completely recover within a week. However, some can develop a form of kidney failure called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome.

The recalled berries have a UPC code of 632474929022, lot code 161104 and a use by date of April 14. The numbers can be found on the vertical edge of the back panel. They can be returned to stores for a full refund. More information can be obtained by calling 1-800-232-8619.
