AMI Awards Meat and Poultry Plants for Environmental Practices

The American Meat Institute (AMI) presented 119 plants with Environmental Recognition awards during its 2014 Conference on Worker Safety, Human Resources and the Environment. This year, 40 plants received the highest level Tier Four awards.

Nestle SA says sales rose 4.2 percent in the first quarter compared with a year ago despite deflationary pressures in Europe. The company said sales of $23.7 billion were held back by a strong franc and by a flat retail environment keeping prices down in Europe.

A quick candy bar could prevent major fights between husbands and wives, at least if a new study that used voodoo dolls is right. That's because low blood sugar can make spouses "hangry," a combination of hungry and angry, said Ohio State University psychology researcher Brad Bushman.

Smithfield Owner Plans IPO to Raise up to $5.3B

Beef Prices Climb to Highest Level Since 1987

A dwindling number of cattle and growing export demand from countries such as China and Japan have caused the average retail cost of fresh beef to climb to $5.28 a pound in February, up almost a quarter from January and the highest price since 1987.

Swiss chocolatier Lindt & Spruengli AG won the latest round in its battle of the bears against Germany's Haribo GmbH. A Cologne appeals court ruled Friday that the company's gold-foil wrapped chocolate teddy doesn't violate Haribo's copyrighted "Gold Bear" name for its gummy bears.

Childhood Obesity Rates Stabilize But More Kids Are Severely Obese

Childhood obesity rates leveled off during a 14-year period between 1999 and 2012, according to research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association: Pediatrics. But the rate of severe obesity increased, according to the study.

Nevada Food Exports Hit Record Levels

Nevada's food and agricultural exports reached a milestone last year, exceeding 2012 sales by more than $19 million. The Nevada Department of Agriculture says export sales hit $137 million in 2013, an increase of 17 percent from the year before.
