SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — The U.S. Department of Labor announced that Tyson Fresh Meats Inc. has agreed to pay more than $2 million to settle sex discrimination cases at four Midwest plants.
The Dakota Dunes, S.D.-based company has agreed to enter into two consent decrees to pay $2.25 million in back wages, interest and benefits to 1,650 women. The women were rejected for employment at facilities in Joslin, Ill., West Point, Neb., and Waterloo and Denison, Iowa.
Under the decree, Tyson also agreed to offer jobs to at least 220 of the women earlier denied employment as positions become available in the Joslin, Waterloo and Denison plants.
Tyson Fresh Meats is a subsidiary of Springdale, Ark.-based Tyson Foods Inc., a federal contractor and one of the world's largest processors of beef and pork.
